“Carver Amigos” from All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church tutor and mentor students from George Washington Carver Dual Language Elementary School, Kansas City Public Schools. Twelve women and men serve weekly. “I am privileged to spend Wednesdays with my small friends tutoring and practicing yoga,” said Carol Cowles, Carver Amigos Volunteer Coordinator.
Recently many Amigos cooked and plated 80 meals that sold for $10-$12, with the proceeds donated to the Principal’s Discretionary Fund. Church members and friends and Carver faculty and staff were invited to contribute by purchasing meals, which included tamale pie, rice and beans, apple chili salad with lime soy dressing, and chocolate bread pudding. “We also made 35 servings to take to teachers and staff when they returned to school,” said Ms. Cowles.
This is the church’s third year to do this fundraiser. Ms. Cowles noted, “We also do a special collection once a year and invite teachers and administrators to speak to the congregation. All Souls Carver Amigos have participated with the school for over 10 years. We tutor, mentor, fundraise, donate knitted hats, mittens, and scarves, and provide “Welcome Back” snacks to teachers at the beginning of each year. This year we also assisted in three Covid vaccination clinics at school by calming and timing the 15 minute ‘rest time’ following the shot.”
