On March 1, Tomahawk Elementary hosted its first ever Read Across America Day, in conjunction with its Caring for Kids partners. Celebrated on Dr. Seuss’s birthday, this event marked a chance to celebrate literacy and everything great about reading.
“The entire Tomahawk student body was focused on reading,” said Principal Brian Watson. “There was an assembly featuring A Cat in the Hat (played by Rick Krapes, from Country Financial). Our Tiger Tribes met and had a “read in” and several other cross-grade level activities, followed by “Celebrity” Read Alouds in all the classrooms.”
Volunteers readers from the community were members of Park City Church, Vineyard Community Church and First Presbyterian Church of Overland Park (Caring for Kids Partners). “All took turns enjoying and sharing their love of reading with our students,” said Principal Watson. “Finally, members of Park City Church hosted a craft-making session for each classroom, including literature-themed crafts and a cool photo booth. It was a GREAT, LITERACY-RICH DAY!”
